In the 11th episode of the “Stay Home Stay with ViVID” series, I would like to introduce an easy hand wash facility invented in Ghana, Veronica Bucket.

In rural areas of Ghana, where infrastructure is inadequate, households do not have access to running water. Veronica bucket was invented to enable people to wash hands with running water and soap. It is named after the inventor and biological scientist, Veronica Bekoe who worked in the field of medical laboratory for 30 years, leading the national AIDS/HIV programmes and serving as the head of National Public Reference Laboratory in Accra. When she was visiting a laboratory, she was concerned of poor hygiene due to lack of running water, and although she tried to fix a tap, it didn’t work. Then she came across the idea to make hand wash facility. Other medical institutions who had the same issue adopted it and it soon spread to restaurants and households. Now, veronica bucket is not only used and produced in Ghana, but all over Africa.

Veronica bucket is very easy to set. You pour water into the bucket with faucet and lid and put it on wooden of steel stand. Put soap on the stand and tray in the beneath faucet and it’s ready to use! It’s a little work to pour water but is such a revolutionary product that allows people to easily wash hands with clean water. Ms. Bekoe is pleased that her idea has contributed beyond her laboratories nation and world widely especially in the pandemic of COVID-19. People in Sekyere is also benefited from the six veronica buckets (will be reported soon) thanks to the donation that ViVID have received from you all. We strongly hope to continue providing buckets until all people in the community have access to them.
