In the 14th episode of the “Stay Home Stay with ViVID” series, we’ll inform the latest information about COVID-19 in Ashanti Region, Ghana where our partner community Sekyere is located.
As we mentioned in the 8th episode of “Stay Home Stay with ViVID,” “Basic information of Our Supporting community, Sekyere,” Sekyere is a village in Ashanti Region of Ghana. “Regions” in Ghana is equivalent to an administrative unit of “Prefectures” in Japan. In Ashanti region, there is the second biggest city in Ghana, Kumasi. As of June 9th, the number of confirmed cases is 1,799(1) in Ashanti region, which is over the cases at 1,785 in Osaka prefecture, the second biggest prefecture in Japan. The number is increasing, while religious gatherings are allowed under certain conditions and schools are expected to resume in mid-June(2).
On the other hand, looking at the entire African continent, the number of cases has nearly reached 200 thousand. However, it is said that the peak of the spread of COVID-19 is yet to come and the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa regional office announced that a maximum of 44 million population could get infected and 190,000 could die if it fails to control. While a lot of developed countries succeeded to control pandemic and resumed economic activities, many developing countries have to restart their economy without taking sufficient preventive measures. Although what ViVID can do is limited, we are doing the best we can to protect the community people of Sekyere from COVID-19.
