In the 12th episode of the “Stay Home Stay with ViVID” series, I would like to talk about environmental issues in Ghana and the reason why we installed plastic bag collection box in Sekyere community.
In Ghana, most of food wastes are customarily used as fertilizers in the backyard to cultivate plants such as plantains and cassava, and to feed the livestocks. What about the used plastic bags/bottles, electronic waste or oversized garbages?
Some of you may have heard of Agbogbloshie in Accra. Is is said it is the world biggest dump site of electronic waste (e-waste) from industrialized nations. Some Japanese artists who are engazing environmental issues are raising a question about this “digital dumping ground”. Workers often inhale the fumes released from the burning of the plastics and metals used in electronics are composed of highly toxic chemicals, needless to say, it causes serious health problems.

According to Mr. Anakwa, the Greater Accra National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Hydro Director, said that about 80 % of floods and fire outbreaks in Accra were man made such that dumping of garbages in drains causes choke of the drain system [1]. ViVID stands with Sekyere to fight any ongoing and upcoming issues!
